 Israel's Peace Movements

A large portion of the Israeli public has been calling for peace since the establishment of the State of Israel. Generally, peace movements have large followings, even  though some of them call for a political end to the current status quo by dissolving the state of Israel and creating a new secular democratic state for Palestinians
 and Israelis alike.

In the current diplomatic environment, such measures are implausible. However, the critical factor in any analysis of Israelis, is the desire for peace amongst left  and right-wing alike.

Israeli Peace Movements

Peace Now

Shalom Achshav [Peace Now], was founded in 1978 by 348 reserve officers of the Israel Defense Forces who believed that only a negotiated end to the conflict in the Middle East could bring true security to Israel and her people.

Peace Now is the largest extra-parliamentary movement in Israel, the country’s oldest peace movement and the only peace group to have a broad public base.

The movement was founded in 1978 during the Israeli-Egyptian peace talks.  At a moment when these talks appeared to be collapsing, a group of 348 reserve officers and soldiers from the Israeli army’s combat units published an open letter to the Prime Minister of Israel calling upon the government to make sure this opportunity for peace not be lost.  Tens of thousands of Israelis sent in support for the letter, and the movement was born.

Americans for Peace Now [APN] was founded to help Shalom Achshav and to build an informed and empowered pro-peace American public.

Gush Shalom (Translated from Hebrew, the name means "The Peace Bloc") is the hard core of the Israeli peace movement.

For years now, Gush Shalom has played a leading role in determining the moral and political agenda of the peace forces in Israel.

Gush Shalom is an extra-parliamentary organization, independent of any party or other political grouping. Some of its activists do belong to political parties, but the Gush is not aligned to any particular party.
The primary aim of Gush Shalom is to influence Israeli public opinion and lead it towards peace and conciliation with the Palestinian people.

Jewish Voice for Peace was founded in 1996, when, despite three years of participating in a “peace process” under the Oslo accords, Palestinians and Israelis seemed increasingly unlikely to achieve the peace they claimed to seek. JVP members were especially concerned that, in violation of Oslo, the Israeli government was continuing to build settlements in the Occupied West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem. Israel also had opened a controversial archaeological tunnel in the Old City of Jerusalem, leading to confrontations in which 65 Palestinians and 14 Israelis were killed. JVP organized more than 100 people to protest at the Israeli consulate in San Francisco, becoming one of the first U.S. Jewish group to criticize Israeli treatment of Palestinians since the “peace process” began.
